My Path to Coaching

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved sitting one-on-one with people—listening to their stories, offering encouragement, and just being an empathetic listener. Maybe that’s just how God wired me, but it also reflects how Jesus lived. He truly saw people, He listened deeply, and He was masterful at asking powerful questions.

Over the past few months, I’ve been on a journey to rediscover my passions and purpose. Life had me heading in one direction, but last fall, God asked me to “let go” of what I thought was my path. It left me feeling uncentered, but that disruption became a gift. In partnering with the Holy Spirit, I’ve found clarity—not just about who I am, but also about who I’m not. Through this process, I’ve come to better understand my strengths and giftings within a fresh framework.

That path led me to coaching.

I had heard about coaching before and was intrigued—especially because it aligns so well with one-on-one, listening-focused conversations that support others. As I explored whether coaching could be a useful tool for our new nonprofit ministry, International Life, I grew more and more excited. My husband and I began taking coaching courses together, and I was quickly hooked.

Not only did I learn how to help others through coaching, I found healing and growth for myself. Even in practice sessions with classmates, I was amazed by how powerful it was to have someone hold space for me—to listen, reflect, and help me move forward through challenges. Coaching gave me clarity, perspective, and confidence.

What surprised me most, though, was how much I loved coaching others. It’s energizing to see someone gain insight, think in new ways, and take practical steps toward change. Watching clients define clear goals and walk away with action plans is truly a joy.

If you’ve never explored coaching before, I encourage you to look into it. Learn what coaching is—and what it isn’t. Find a coach who listens well, creates a non-judgmental space, and empowers you to navigate life’s challenges. Coaching has the power to shift your perspective and set you on a new, life-giving trajectory.
